Probation Officers

Also called as parole agents, probation officers operate as administrators of courts. They are part of the Department of Corrections who serve under the umbrella of the court process. Probation officer jobs are the implementing arm of the tribunal system when a certain individual is placed on a probation. In the United States, you can spot this kind of profession not only in the Federal level but even in the countryside. A probation officer is present wherever you can see a bar of proficient jurisdiction. However, there are specific limitations in their responsibilities which they have to strictly follow as their work deals with serious cases.

When the Federal Government in the United States abolished parole in 1984, there were no more agents present in courts of a national level. However, there are only a small number of individuals supervised by probation officers which were sentenced prior to the year it was erased. These individuals can only be called as such as once they meet one of the requirements. Probation officer jobs have to accomplish a Bachelor’s degree which is equivalent to a four- year term of scholastic program. The profession can even be more credible if the person finished Master’s. A Graduate diploma can now qualify a probation officer on vacant positions on a countrywide degree.

Typically, probation officers perform investigations on defendants that have not yet received a sentence. Ironic it may sound but they also assist the release of an individual that have been imprisoned for years. Probation officer jobs actually includes the assessment of an inmate so a report will be made and eventually, be reviewed by the warden then on to the Board who will provide the final decision of freeing the convicted from jail. With that, the probation officer will be able to witness the growth of the offender, from the period where he or she obtained the verdict from the judge to the time of much awaited emancipation.

Probation officers are typically not garbed in a uniform. They basically wear casual attire but since they are also involved in courts, they have to be in business suits for formality’s sake. Probation officer jobs are given a badge for them to be recognized to be in authority. The government has also licensed this kind of profession to bring pepper sprays and concealed weapons for security which they can employ especially when a suspect will make physical attempts during arrests. However, this does not mean that since a probation officer has been provided with legitimacy, they can by all means utilize what they carry along.

With the aforementioned, not at all because probation officers are more accountable because they work ensuring that proper law is exercised. They do not want to taint their reputation that has already been established. Probation officer jobs then have to be extra cautious with the pepper sprays and concealed weapons they bring around. The government has permitted this kind of profession to carry such items because a probation officer can actually exercise complete detective powers. Speaking of which, there is also a requirement for them to enroll in a police academy so that they can receive certification from the training experienced.

Going back to the court process, even if probation officers are part of the Department of Corrections, they follow a paramilitary command scheme which is typically spearheaded by a Chief Director. Instructions generally spring down to the Deputy Chief then forwarded to a Senior Probation Detective. Probation officer jobs can manage loads of cases with offenders that have been convicted from different crimes. There is a probation officer though with a special assignment such as those who deal with drug addiction, mental health and violent histories, among the others.
